This book, edited by Alessandro Morandotti and Mauro Natale, is dedicated to the spectacular Picture Gallery, also known as the Generale Berthier Gallery, which has been the vital core of the Borromeo family's collections since the late 17th century. The work, published by Silvana Editoriale, was published as a natural and necessary complement to the reopening of the Gallery to the public in 2008 after a long, systematic restoration of the walls, furnishings and all paintings in one wing of the Borromeo Palace on Isola Bella. In addition to the introductory essays, the volume includes 120 profiles preceded by a note on the condition of each work and a historic and critical description of the frames. The book also includes a review of documents that explain how each painting was acquired and its various movements within the Borromeo properties. The result is a history of the ambitious decorative project that occupied the Borromeo family for four centuries. With its varied composition, the Gallery of Isola Bella still today has the singular appearance of an old-fashioned Gallery, where an original hangs next to a copy, a mediocre work next to a work of quality. The book investigates the complexity of these decisions, adding a vital contribution to the history of painting and collecting in northern Italy.
